A Phonetic Approach
Learning a comprehensive set of phonetic elements empowers readers to decode successfully. Phonics teaches the basic sounds for each letter of the alphabet and goes further to teach unique sounds made by combinations of letters. Sixty-five percent of the English language is purely phonetic and can be decoded easily using phonics. A phonetic approach gives clues to help decode sight words as well.
The Montessori Method
The Montessori Method is based on a belief in the innate ability and drive of each child to learn and acquire skills on their own. Students are shown how to use learning materials in a prepared environment and are observed by an educator to gauge individual progress. In this way, their intrinsic motivation is nurtured and they have a sense of ownership of their accomplishments. In applying the Montessori Method, we determine where a child is competent in the progression of phonetic elements and where to start them in the sequence.
Waseca Reading Program
The systematic program we use allows students to see their path to reading. Each cabinet contains a set of phonetic elements, and each drawer isolates a particular one. The steps to learning are the same in each drawer with only the phonetic element changing. This helps students gain confidence in the process as they focus on the new element. A workbook designed for the Waseca Reading Program allows readers to chart progress through the steps and gives extra practice with new words. Fiction and non-fiction reading materials are color coded to the cabinets. In this way, students accumulate a vocabulary of words that they can decode. Practice that is structured for success builds fluency and confidence.
